All across the land , the earth is clothe with many hue of gold . Recently , I reelect from a road trip that took me from the Ozark Mountains in Arkansas to the Rockies in Colorado , and back . We went through miles and miles of Kansas , prairie and grasslands on the way out and we live through part of Kansas and mostly Oklahoma on the retort trip-up . We push back through yard of Akka of farmland — most of them growing milo ( more on this by and by ) , corn , soja , hay and straw — at least that is what we saw from the road . The wayside hosted sunny golden - yellow sunflowers and Jerusalem artichokes along fences .

We outride with my journey companion , Tina Marie Wilcox ’s kinsfolk in Goldfield , Colorado at 10,000 + feet . The mountain out the front window was scream Bull Mountain and out the back was Battle Mountain . Bull Mountain was covered in huge bristlecone pines and other coniferous trees and golden aspen shone brightly amongst them . They are appropriately called quaking aspen and their leaves rustle with the smallest amount of air current which causes them to shimmer ; I never see them entirely still the whole stay .

Battle Mountain was another variety of gold — as in “ there is atomic number 79 in them thar ’ hills ” . Both of Tina ’s folks — John and Lois Wilcox were employed at the mine before retiring to their deal home — and I learn more about minelaying for Au then I imagined potential . John is a riches of entropy and we drove up to reckon at the mining operation , which is fascinating ; I was most astonished and glad to see how the mine tame and puts the deal back .

hike around the neighborhood , we see the last of summer in the yards and gardens . It was in the mid - thirties at night when we were there , however we still saw herb plants like milfoil , many multifariousness of artemesia , primrose , monarda , thistle , as well as bright gold tansy and sunflowers . Folks in the Rocky Mountains live with a very unforesightful grow time of year and variable weather with farting and hail ; I believe it must be a challenge to garden there .

We soundly enjoyed our visit to the Garden of the Gods ( talk about red rock ! ) and the Manitou Springs Cliff Dwellings which had a really attractive and enlightening display of many native herbs , wildflower , shrub and tree . Their signage explain how the plants were used in the past and how they are used today .

En route back to the Ozarks , we made a trip to see some herbaceous plant buddies in Oklahoma . We really pick up three rainbow while we were there which sure as shooting would indicate a particular place . Kay and Bob Whitlock grow Riesling grape vine and sell them to a local wine maker . We jubilantly sample the fruity , slightly sweet wine and heartily gave it our thumbs up . In the rows of green - turning - gold grapevines was a golden pear tree Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree loaded with luscious golden - right yield . We harvested a bucket in no prison term flat and were chip in some to take home , along with a few bottles of wine made from the yield of their vines . Kay has crates of the pears in their dusty cellar where she is preparing to make her own pear wine . Inspired by the gold gift , here is aPear and Cranberry Crumblefor you to try .

The Ozarks were turning orangish , atomic number 79 and russet when we returned , and now back in Maryland , the leave-taking are fall fast . The earth is covered in her many - hue autumn raiment — today I scuffle through fall leaves — amber underfoot .
