Purple coneflower ( Echinacea purpurea , Zones 3–9 ) and bigleaf hydrangea ( Hydrangea macrophylla , Zones 6–9 ) look absolutely perfect together . Hydrangeas , famously , are grim on acidic stain and pinker on alkaline soils because they postulate aluminum to make the blue pigment and it is well-heeled for plants to take in aluminum from soil if it is acidulent . This hydrangea is racy just blush into garden pink in a way that complements the bright Battle of Magenta tones of the coneflower perfectly .

A brilliant yellow Asiatic lily(Lilium , Asian radical , zone 5–8 ) looks all the brighter for being set against the background of a dark pinkish - purpleness astilbe ( Astilbesp . , Zones 4–8 ) .
