Your raised bed are too dry , your cautiously transplant tomatoes are devour by insect and your cucumbers are freakish little yellow thing with bumpy greenish nipples .
That ’s the way it goes in the real world , is n’t it ? I ’m almost convinced that the pictures in gardening books are completely created pixel by pixel by quip teams of graphic designers , just to mess with us .
If you press on despite your failures , however , and keep gardening from year to year , learning as you go – things will change . I ’ve shared my thoughts here before on the value of experiment … but today I ’m doing it again !
I started gardening when I was six and kill most of what I planted . By the clock time I was a stripling , I make love pretty well what I could get and what I could n’t . By the sentence I was in my thirty-something , I was an expert and felt the time had come to start writing gardening books and sharing what I had pick up .

One year I swallow up drubbing wastes and new manure into pits and plant squashes on top of them . ( Success : the vines maturate like demented and involve no additional fertilizing . ) Another year I try grafting common fig tree scion onto my mulberry tree diagram . ( Fail : though the coinage are related , they would n’t take . ) At another power point , I adjudicate to mix in the buff manure , compost and weeds together in a bbl of pee to rot for a few month , and then use that anaerobiotic “ tea ” to water my greenhouse plant . ( Success : nothing was burn and their growth was rich and green . )
These experiments top to other experiments and sometimes some awful successes . I ’ve deal to grow Key limes , deep brown and black pepper vines out of doors in North Florida on the due south - facing wall of my house . I ’ve also successfully engraft peach , Japanese plums and nectarine onto barbaric Florida Chickasaw plums and gotten great fruit .
On the other hired man , I killed a few almond and sweet-flavored cherry trees I was hear to grow in the Ocala area . I burned my kale badly by side - dressing with hot poulet manure . And my attempt to grow dent corn in the front lawn without fertilizer ? Nope !
The best means to become a better gardener is to … garden ! Garden with exuberance , not reverence . Know that God designed nature as a complex machine and we can only steer it a little bit . The sun , the rain ( or lack therefrom ) , the insects , the dope – many of these are outside our control .
Yet if we learn a small more each year , we ’ll get better and our “ luck ” will improve . Some plants just are n’t suitable to Florida and take a stack of workplace ( hello , beefsteaks ! ) . Others raise like weeds , such as the amazing “ yard - long edible bean ” from Southeast Asia .
If you essay planting pumpkins one twelvemonth and they do n’t work out , do n’t give up . There ’s always a unexampled variety or coinage you’re able to try . You might have plant them too too soon or too late . The soil may have been too arenaceous or take with roundworm . That yr may have been a big one for bugs .
What I do is plant a bunch of unlike things and then see what does well . If a plant fails the first year , I do n’t of necessity give up on it . I might try again .
