DIY Barn Doors – The Process
Note : We do have concluded step by footfall plans on our Etsy shop : DIY Barn Door plan
The key in building your own barn doors is to keep them hard enough to handle the stress of scuttle and closedown , without making them too heavy and cumbersome to operate .
If you want a little more rustic feel – choose rough sawn timber .

Our doorway is made of two 3/4″ forest bed – the backboard layer , and a front face shape level .
At 1.5″ thickheaded , the finished room access is stark to agree nearly any rolling barn door ironware on the market . How you want your finish door to look will decide what you use for the basketball backboard layer .
Step 1. Creating the Backboard
For the back panel , the choice of material will depend if you need a tranquil finish , or a more traditional groove - board flavour .
For a quiet finish , you may use a 3/4″ compact storage locker - score piece of plyboard cut to the want threshold length and width .
For our door , we wanted a more traditional look – so we used 8″ wide spit and channel boards purchased at a local lumber yard . The clapper and channel plank not only wait great – but add a fantastic amount of strength to the overall objet d’art .

We cut each 8″ across-the-board piece of music to our hope length ( 84″ ) , and then ran the end pieces through the tabular array get a line to slay the exposed lingua and the vallecula slot on each side of the door .
We ended up using 6 total boards per door , and cut the end off so the final measure came out to 35″ full – enough to cover each side of our hallway door opening by a few inches .
Step 2 Creating the Face Frame / Front Bracing
Once the backboard was thoroughgoing , we assembled together the tongue and rut gameboard on a unconditional surface – and began cutting our front frame pieces .
We used 3 1/2″ wide x 3/4″ thick true pine boards for the fount frame , and started by dilute two 36″ patch for the top and bottom door strips .
This is an important step in the unconscious process , especially when you have tongue and groove board – it make a unbending cross small-arm that holds all of the tongue and grooves substantial – and a strong infinite to eventually pay heed your door ironware .

Once the top and bottom fount frame header plank are in place – you could get a little originative with the respite of the facial expression framing .
We wanted a traditional crisscross brace look , but in reality – the sky is the limit if you want to create x bracing , z bracing , or no halfway bracing at all .
We finish by cutting out the stay face frame piece , measuring out the all important cross brace by sitting it on the frame and tracing the angle for the cutting .

We then glue and pass with flying colors each piece in place . Once complete – we turned over and used 1 1/4″ screwing to screw in the plank from behind – make a solid 1 1/2″ threshold that is quick for paint , staining … and hanging !
For us , that chore will have to waitress a calendar week or two while the plumbing and electric are cease and the shiplap walls go up in the theater .
When it hail to the track and computer hardware , there are a lot of options , and yes they can be expensive too .
We chose to go with a hanging doorway and bar roller – and were able to find a gross doorway set on - line for under $ 50.EWEI ’S Homewares 6 - Feet Country Steel Sliding Barn Door Hardware – Black
Hanging is pretty straightforward , with a mere adherence of the plate and steering wheel to the door , and then hanging the rail above .
Now – if only I could figure out how to fake my own smoothing iron for the hanging ironware we could really deliver … 🙂
