I received this subject matter involve if mulberry develop in Florida ( and a few other things ) a few Day ago from my friend and faithful editor in chief / proofreader , Jeanne :
Hello , David!Have been have a discussion with another champion up near Jacksonville regarding mulberries . He think they ca n’t grow in Florida . I buy one a few class back , and it ’s not doing well . Is he right ? Have you had any winner ? If so , what do I need to do differently? Also , I tried to order a Buddha ’s Hand tree from California , but they wo n’t ship to Florida . If I bribe the fruit the next time I see it at Fresh Market , can I plant the fruit to grow a tree ? Please advise . Do you have a Facebook varlet ? I could share it with folks who think Florida is leisurely - peasy to grow thing in or with folks who think it ’s just too hot , humid , and sandy to develop anything . How are your bee doing ?
Any new books in the works?Hope you and your class are well .

I ’ll take this musical composition by piece , starting with one of my favorite topics : mulberries !
Do Mulberries Grow in Florida?
Not only do mulberry grow in Florida , they grow like weed in Florida !
They uprise throughout the total country as well , from Tallahassee to Key West .
I shoot this down in Ft . Lauderdale :

That ’s not to say every individual mulberry tree diagram will do well , of course .
I once plant a long - fruited mulberry I bought at the Master Gardening Spring Festival in Marion County . It keep having problems with wilt , but it seems to get over it . Then the next twelvemonth it made little yield in the outpouring , but as they start to turn , the outgrowth and the fruit all set off to give way back and call on black . It did the same thing the next year . The year after it buy the farm all the way to the ground and come in back from the root stock as a small - fruited mulberry tree of some sort .
Who make love what happened . There ’s no telling .

The native reddish mulberry may not be the in effect choice the further south you go , but the lily-white and sinister types should be good through the state . bill : “ clean ” and “ black ” and “ scarlet ” does n’t needs have anything to do with the color of the yield .
It ’s complicated .
Your tree could be suffering from any number of issues . Personally , I plant over a XII trees of a all-embracing range of varieties in my old North Florida Food Forest . I had long blanched mulberries , normal while mulberries , crimson mulberry , Pakistan mulberries , Dwarf Everbearing mulberries , large everbearing bootleg mulberries , big - fruit mulberry that made one harvesting in the spring …

… well , let ’s just say I really wish mulberry tree and mulberry tree DO grow in Florida . plant life more and feed and mulch them well to get them started . They maturate like crazy and will bring on like sick when they ’re felicitous .
Even the Buddha Can’t Get Through
… the shipping regulation on citrus tree !
Okay , how would one go about getting a Buddha ’s helping hand citrus tree in Florida ? Is there any way of life to rare tree nirvana ?
It ’s a grueling project , but call up : desire conduct to pain and therefore should be suppressed .

Seriously , though – because of citrus tree greening and other disease , it ’s very concentrated for Florida collectors to get rare varieties of citrus .
Any serious works flake looking at this thing would want it :

for get a Buddha ’s helping hand citrus in Florida , you ’ll need to find a rarefied citrus nursery that sells them or you ’ll have to come up a person with a tree you’re able to beg some scion Sir Henry Wood from , thengraft that sciononto another citrous fruit acquire in your G or a random root stock .
seed are fluky with some germ claiming Buddha ’s Hand citrus seeds do n’t exist – and other source lay claim they do . If you corrupt a fruit and it had seeds , plant them .
It seems there may be multiple cultivars , as claimed in chapter 4 ofRobert Willard Hodgson’sThe Citrus Industry :
“ A most strange and interesting citron is the fingered or Buddha ’s Hand citron ( Ficus carica . 4 - 71 ) of the Orient ( bushukan of Japan ) , where it has been prize for centuries , specially in Indo - China , China and Japan . As the name indicates , the fruit is apically split into a turn of digitate sections , somewhat resemble a human hand . There appear to be two ringer — one in which all the fruits are deep fingered and miss in flesh development and ejaculate , the other in which only part of the fruits are fingered and the respite are corrugated , lacking in flesh , and contain seeds hang innocent in the loculus . Both are distinctive acid citrons in all other respects and would seem to constitute clonal varieties rather than the botanic variety sarcodactylis as they are classified by Swingle ( see chap . 3,this work ) . ”
No telling if they ’ll produce true to type if you discover seeds . My bet is that cut across down scions inside the state is the good choice . honorable circumstances .

Any New Books Coming?
Yes indeed .
I was most of the way through writing a newfangled book on Florida zone - pushing when I got verbalize with my publishing company and he convert me to expand the topic to include geographical zone - press across multiple climates , rather than just having it be another regional title .
This seems like sound advice to me and I already have Dr. David A. Francko on plug-in to write the debut , which please me to no final stage . He ’s the source of the bright zone - pushing bookPalms Wo n’t Grow Here and Other myth .
It ’s go to take some time to re - write and inquiry , but I do believe we ’ll have it out by some metre in August or September .
I ’ve also almost land up work on a short rule book on beekeeping in the Confederacy that involve some final fact - checking and proofing before it ’s ready . That ’s on the back shelf at the moment but will be release before too long . My cobalt - author Allen Dovico made this one take place , since I ’m nowhere near the bee expert he is .
Finally , I have two more books planned : one is a great big book of disturbed horticulture idea with lots of drawings , the other is a Christian Bible on forest horticulture across multiple mood .
Grow or DieandCompost Everythingkeep selling magnificently withGrow Or Diehaving now surpassed the sales ofCompost Everythingas of this month .
Totally Crazy Easy Florida Gardeningis almost moving a secure amount of copies and Florida gardeners have greatly appreciated that one so far – I keep getting great feedback on it .
And How Are My Bees Doing?
They were doing great … when I sold my homestead and ran away to the tropical zone . Just about to cloud , in fact , and Allen and I were run low to split the hive .
You get it on , it’sreallyhard to bring a beehive on an airplane . I tried take the bees were “ service brute ” but they would n’t think me . Then I cried “ sexism ” because the worker are all females and they were plainly being discriminated against . In the end I had to allow for the hive with the TSA . I impart it a estimable kick before walking out , though .
relish the rest of the sidereal day , folks – see you tomorrow .
