Last week I was asked to write up an aquatic vegetable tilt for a water garden / live tub pond . Let ’s take a look at some of the easy and tasty .
Easy Aquatic Vegetables
Water Spinach/Kangkong
Kangkong covers the dry land and can grow in moist soil or place upright weewee . Photo credit .
Kangkong is a congenator of sweet potatoes that you ’ll only feel in Asiatic markets . In some nation it ’s classified as an incursive so get plant from a glasshouse may be impossible . Seedsare available online , though I do n’t recommend growing it if you ’re in a place where it ’s illegal . The leaf and young shoot are eatable tender or cooked . Steamed , they taste mild with rich mushroom and Asparagus officinales undertones . you’re able to sometimes see these greens at Asiatic markets . They ’ll exhaust your entire pool , so watch out . Very fertile and VERY tight - growing .
Taro

I’vewritten a petty on tarobefore but have n’t grown it very much .
My friend Mart raise Colocasia esculenta in his aquaponics systems and has been work on boost his root yields . They love the body of water .

Be heedful when falsify taro , however , because the oxalic Zen crystal in the raw roots and leave can mess you up . seem it up online and fix it properly , then it ’s a majuscule crop .
Chinese Water Chestnuts
Chinese water chestnuts are an light - to - grow aquatic veg that rapidly fills a quad . They ’ll choke out some of the contest , so plan accordingly .
The downside of Taiwanese water chestnuts is that they ’re rather a pain to process ; however , the flavor of the overbold corms is toppingly scented and nutty .
Water Celery
Though not quite aquatic veg , clumps of piss cultivated celery will afford lots of flavor for your cooking . “Oenanthe javanica1 ” by KENPEI
Water celery is more of an herbaceous plant than a real aquatic veggie .
Though water system celery does n’t set stubble , it does have a rich zippy celery taste that will spice up any flock of wimp soup . It ’s a low - grow , clopping works that spreads to fill up up a space – keep it turn back !

Bonus : water system cultivated celery looks beautiful , particularly the light-green and pink variegate form .
Duck Potatoes
Duck potatoes are one of those aquatic vegetables you rarely see in culture . exposure recognition .
duck’s egg potatoes used to be a wild - reap aquatic vegetable of the natives and is still sought after as an splendid hazardous food . They grow easily in a cheery pool and will yield tasty tubers for the table in the fall . Green Deanecovers duck potatoes here .
Watercress
If you live further north , why not give watercress a try ? This is one of the few commonly cultivated and unwarranted harvested aquatic veg from outside the tropics .

Watercress is in the mustard kinfolk and likes run water the skillful , thoughit ’s not strictly necessary . I ’ve gotten it to root in a glass of water from bundle of cresson I bribe in the grocery computer storage . you could also start watercressfrom seed .

Aquatic Vegetables for Pond Margins
If you have shallow cloudy areas along the boundary of your pool , stress implant a few of these semi - aquatic veggie .
Malanga
turn a garden in your pond and get malanga roots .
Malangagrows great with lots of water . It ’s an easy root veggie and tastes expert . It also ask a lot less processing than its oxalic - acid rich first cousin cocoyam . Even the young leave are edible when well - cooked , making it a root and a green . A protagonist of mine threw some roots in her pool once … and they continue growing , even though they were in stand water .
Though that ’s not commonly the fashion malanga grows , it sure did n’t mind it either .

Ground Nut
Ground bollock , also known asApios americana , is a aboriginal North American plant that likes to grow in moist areas . ply it a trellis so it can climb and it will come in back year after year and offer you with lots of tasty roots .
Yacon
Growing yacon roots is n’t gruelling , provided you have plenty of moisture .
Yacon seems to really like constant wet . strain it along the bound of your pool – I ’ll calculate it will be happy . This harvest from the Andes has tasty honeyed solution that can be rust like an apple or turned into a syrup with a outstandingly low rating on the glycemic exponent . Though not truly a water vegetable , it should do great unless it ’s completely imbue .
Now that you have a list of aquatic vegetable choices … what are you wait for ? Gardening in a pond is so prosperous you ’ll wonder why you had n’t done it before . Two Scripture : no watering .

Go hunt down some coolheaded water veggie and start up found .
One of my favorite sources for uncommon veg ( which also hold more aquatic choice that are not on this leaning ) is Eric Toensmeier ’s bookPerennial veg .
Pick up a written matter – it ’s great indication and will open your optic to the many angry and rattling crops most gardener overlook . Mine has been well - thumb through and take in detail at least double – and every time I pick it up I witness something novel I missed . Buy at my link and I ’ll make a buck or so commission – and it does n’t cost you a centime more .
