Details of the season worth savoring
Today ’s photos come from Eric Sternfels . We ’ve visited his rest home garden in Philadelphia before ( Big Garden , Small Space : Part 1andPart 2 ) and always pleased to see more of his beautiful blank space .
Developing my very narrow-minded and mostly shady small garden on the out edge of Philadelphia , I most enjoy thisearly spring time , even when the broad vista are not peculiarly photogenic . But closelipped - up observance of all the early bloomers and fresh foliage excites me each year anew .
I guess this is the well wide view of early April in my garden . The pale pinko isCardaminequinquefolia(Zones 7–9 ) , which I opine you show in a former GPOD set from my garden .

Here ’s a panoptic view from the opposite direction take in June . The haze of white is the bloom ofSaxifragastolonifera(Zones 6–9 ) . On the right is another blanched bloomer , Korean bellflower(Campanulatakesimana , Zones 5–8 ) . The pink is Pink KnockOut rose during its first kick of flower .
Donkeytail spurge(Euphorbiamyrsinities , Zones 5–9 ) in March .
Wild hemorrhage heart(Dicentraeximia , Zones 3–9 ) in mid - April .

Celandine poppy , aka wood poppy(Stylophorum diphyllum , Zones 4–9 ) , along with self - seeded violet in early April .
An unidentified seedlingEpimedium , with one parent likely the variety ‘ Domino ’ .
Here ’s a nice picture ofEpimedium‘Domino ’ ( Zones 5–8 ) , which is the suspected parent of a ego - seeded hybrid above .

Heuchera‘Caramel’(Zones 4–8 ) living up to its name in early April .
Carolina jessamine vine(Gelsemium sempervirens , Zones 7–10 ) with a yellow swallowtail visit .
Mertensia virginica ( Virginia bluebells , Zones 3–8 ) buds are a striking shadiness of mulberry purple before they open and justify their coarse name .

Even though my own garden is a funny one , here ’s a gutter plantation owner I made with a rock gardener buddy as a fundraiser for theNorth American Rock Garden Society .
