First new plant for 2010; flowers make good neighbors

So , this time of yr I get lots of questions about when to fecundate the lawn . keep your clock time and money until at least April 15 , when the grass is actively growing . Before then , you ’re make your money away to feed weeds . And please , oh please , ignore every come-on from skunk and feed products . It ’s a cozenage , folks . Why these products are n’t banish I do n’t know . Life will be much happy for our piss and your lawn if you lend oneself a sparse layer of compost alternatively . If you ’re itching to fecundate with something stronger , pick out a dense release organic granular . But not until April 15 . Compost can be go for any time . Mow or dig those sens ; weed killer “ products ” will do you no serious right now . And oh my gosh : read the label . If it contract 24 minute before you could go out there again , I would n’t mail an impeccant foot out there ever !

If you tuned in to last week ’s blog picture of the spring starflower ( Ipheion uniflorum ) under snow , depend at the same plant two days later !

Defying the jurisprudence of late freezes , I spent last weekend clipping until my pruners screamed for mercy . Even as I swore I ’d get disembarrass of some of this stuff and have less work , I was add up to my new plant life lean . No logic here , none at all .

Although I ’m look until I finish sporty up to venture to the nursery , I did succumb to thisCarex morrowii‘Aurea - variegata ’ ( variegated Nipponese sedge ) . I ’ve admired it for a few years , and after see its operation on a late garden scout , I make up one’s mind to supersede the deadAgave celsiiwith it .

One thing I ’ve learned is that the speckle make all the departure . In the very shadowy rental house side , columbines molder after a few seasons . Last year , I institute one in the front layer under the yaupon , where it gets forenoon shade and a late afternoon blast of Lord’s Day . It ’s elated .

Sweet story for you : one nighttime I was cut into up blowball in the side thou for the bunnies ’ appetiser . A woman and her little son ( 3 or so ) crossed the street and pointed at the leucojums ( Leucojum aestivum ) .

cogitate that the little boy want a flower , I snipped it with my fingers . He regarded it in awe in his bantam hands .

Then the mother pointed . I was going to cut another , but she grope for at the soil : what she wanted was a division . I run to get the trowel and unearth one for her . I asked her to go forth her name and address in the postbox and I ’d dig up more when I had the shovel . “ No , ” she said , “ One is enough . It will grow . ”

That is for sure . My past air division will spring a certified hedge around the cat pole in a year or two .   This cat is Sam , by the way .
