I spend a wonderful weekend with Noah Sanders , author ofBorn Again Dirtand teacher withFoundations for Farming(formerly known as “ Farming God ’s Way ” ) .

We were also join by Zimbabwean farmer and human rights activist Ben Freeth , who is a thoughtful and loving Christian brother with a unparalleled philia for the downtrodden .

Noah ’s farm is a meeting berth for all sorts of interesting people from around the earthly concern . Missionaries and businessman , new gardeners and old experts , pedagogue and homeschooling mum . We bask our time there and the hospitality , plus the kids enjoyed meeting other homesteading baby with an abundance of Nerf guns .

When I was in Indonesia back in 2019 before the world vanish apart , I became more intimate with the Foundations For Farming program as it was being used byKingdom Workers , the Lutheran charity that send me as an adviser . Overall , it is a useful system for restoring degraded land and avoiding the continued destruction of already suffering ecosystems . I delight register through their breeding materials in the little apartment we had in Timor .

The ethics and the “ Foundations for Profitability ” point in the program are solid .

Asstated on their site :

“ profitableness is essential for sustained product and development . The only alternative to lucrativeness for survival in the poor term is begging or theft , both of which induce poverty in the long full term .

Profitability is potential if you faithfully go for these management principle of doing everything :

On Time . Plan ahead . fix well . Start early . Never be late !

At a High Standard . Do every functioning and item as well as you could with no cutoff . Be honest and ethical in all you do .

Without Wasting . Don’t waste prison term , soil , urine , sun , seed , nutrient , labour , zip , opportunity etc .

With Joy . If you do these first three things dependably without ego pity , kvetch , blaming others , making excuses , but with gratefulness , there will be no motivation for care and hopelessness and you will have Bob Hope and joy which gives you potency . ”

sound dot , specially when applied in the third world where poor standards and terrible timing are commonplace . We all need these things , too . particularly delight and honestness .

The Foundations for Farming System of Growing

As for the genuine organization of farming itself , the point are as follows :

Foundations for a Successful Crop

In edict to produce a near crop these principle should be go for :

-Maintain a mulch cover . Do n’t burn !

-Maintain the soil construction & conserve the lifelike fauna . Do n’t plow !

-Plant according to exact spacing and specifications to reach optimal plant populations that give your plants the best chance to thrive .

-Give nutrition to your plants in whichever form you are able i.e. manure , compost , etc .

-Weed regularly and soundly , catching the weeds while they are small for save fourth dimension and vim and cause the whole system to become far more manageable .

My thoughts on the Foundations for Farming Growing System

Though I appreciate the work FFF does , I am not a complete advocate of the system . Here are my thoughts on the five point .

Mulching and Burning

On maintaining a mulch concealment , I have a mixed popular opinion . Sometimes mulching can lead to an unbelievable buildup of pests , particularly in soaked tropic situations . You may build adorable grunge , but you may also have all your tender crop run through by type slug . As for not burning ,   this is a good world-wide approach , peculiarly in areas where flog and burn is rampant . However , I think in controlled burning at the stake in ordering to make biochar and ash for feed the soil . It ’s too broad to say “ do n’t burn . ” I do n’t like to lay down commandment when it come to land .

Without burning , you do n’t get terra preta .

Bare soil and combustion can both have their place in a sustainable organization . Burning a theatre of operations to restore the area and drive away venomous Snake is helpful as well .

Plowing

On the second gunpoint , I also consider there is a space for plowing – or at least some shape of tillage . I primarily dig only once and then progress up the soil from there , but that initial dig is very helpful . Plowing can destroy soil structure long terminus , so I translate the prohibition , but again : it ’s too broad . you’re able to have good luck building territory by tilling under cover crop . The method of tillage makes a difference , too . RememberThe Plowman ’s Folly .

Spacing

On point three , no tilt . Good spacing is a good melodic theme . Your spatial arrangement should vary based on climate and soil fertility , however .

Fertilizing

Point four is hunky-dory for selection horticulture , but not for the best victuals . There is a strain of no - till dogma these day that promotes the mind that soil mineralization and composition does n’t really count , supply you have plenty of microlife in the stain to make nutrient available . I do not trust this to be the true statement . I also do n’t believe in the other extreme point , where you simply depend at the deadened mineral composition of the dirt and add whatever is lacking without considering the lifespan in the dirt . Instead , I embrace the idea that you need both muckle of life in the soil as well as plenty of raw material for that grunge biography to make available . If you need to garden to come through , sure – go ahead and prey with whatever you have . But if you want optimum nutriment in your solid food , you should essay out fertilizers that also ply micronutrients that plant life can employ and then make available to us . There are studies indicate a decrease in the minerals in our solid food supply due to the depletion of soil . I do n’t think these minerals can be replace in poor ground with simply composting on website or throwing on some local manure .

Weeding

On the final point : yes , keep the skunk out . They compete for resources and will lower your harvest home .

I ’m not opposed to the Foundations for Farming System as a upright jump off point ; however , I do believe there are exceptions to some of the rules . The principle were utilitarian when I was in Indonesia , as they were meticulously removing all the weeds and grass down to bare dirt everywhere and burning all the constitutional matter in between garden . It was scandalous to see houses surround by nothing but bare grime because that was what they believe was beneficial . Learning to compost and stop burning everything is important . And mulching around their yield Tree is a great estimation . But there is a time and place for everything . Foundations for Farming is a becoming foundation in some situations , but not in all .

Learn to keep , trial , learn and be diligent and you ’ll succeed with your very own system of horticulture . I do n’t think God has any one preferent form of farming ( except for maybe intellectual nourishment forests ) .

All that said , I greatly appreciate the unspoiled oeuvre being done by Ben and Noah and many others . The primary grandness in this is carry through psyche and help people grow their own food for thought . It ’s light years ahead of toxicant - based commercial-grade farming methods . I for certain match much more than I disagree .

So – what do you think about the Foundations for Farming methods ? Perhaps these “ rule ” are needed in places where everything is upside - down and expert Education Department is lacking . Maybe I ’m way off - base . I have been in the yesteryear , like when I used to not care okra plant .
