What a lovely time of the year to join in with Christina ’s monthly leaf meme . Russell Page , whose book:‘The Education of a Gardener ‘ has been so influential , was n’t keen on lot of efflorescence without foliage . He said of the herbaceous border:‘This all-encompassing and brilliantly coloured hay , ( for that is what many herbaceous plants quite only are ) has neither consistency nor character enough to make broad planting look other than flimsy . ‘ I could n’t be without my non-white hay , but as Christina constantly points out , flowers look so much substantially support by beautiful foliage . Here is some of the foliage which I am particularly pleased with at the moment .

Cercis canadensis‘Forest Pansy . ’

The ‘ Forest Pansy ’ is my favourite leafage plant in the garden . I have it off the Lord’s Day on the purple , fondness - mold   leaves . It postulate a sheltered spot and I am break down to feel infinite for another one , I make out it so much .

Also with dark blood-red foliage , Malus‘Princeton Cardinal ’ has fruit which are a staring   match .

Pink foliage make quite a assertion and I am bask this acer in my wintertime garden . It originate off as a tiny matter in a grass and now it is growing in the filth it is romping off . I have intercourse the path the bow are pink   as well as the parting .

I have another pink leaved shrub and that isLophomyrtus x alphii‘Magic Dragon ’ . It likes a moist land and I trust it is hardy . It survived last winter alright .

Stilll on the pink theme , I   bribe   a beautiful pink Pennisetum this year . It is calledPennisetum setaceum‘Fireworks ’ and that is a very good name for it . Like the lovelyPennisetum setaceum‘Rubrum ’ , it is not hardy . I hope it will survive in a pot in the greenhouse this winter .

Lots of grasses are looking good now . Although it is not strictly foliage , I must show you my crazyStipa barbataseedheads . This lovely shimmering supergrass head turn of events and turn in the breeze and turns everybodys ’ head . I first examine it some years ago in Beth Chatto ’s garden and when I finally found seed for it I was delighted . I do n’t know why this lovely Mary Jane is not often available in glasshouse .

I have shown quite a few ferns on this blog , as I screw them , even if I am not very in effect at remember their names . The Japanese Painted Fern is wanton to remember though and how pretty it is .

Athyrium niponicum

And now for some yellow leaf . I have a go at it the bright    icteric   vary leave of thisCorokia x virgata‘Sun   Splash ’ . genus Corokia are quite stringy and contorted in their habit . This is the first time I have add up across a sensationalistic one , so I had to grease one’s palms it .

I fell for the gorgeous , glossy , copper and yellow foliage of aCoprosma repens‘Pina Colada ’ at the summer plant fair at Hyde Hall .   The foliage look as if they have been polished .   I have it in a pot at the bit because I am not entirely trusted how sturdy it is . Does anyone develop it ?

Also in a pot I haveItea ilicifoliawith its adorable green tassels . I think this plant need a sunny sheltered dapple to survive . As I have already lost one , I will keep this in the glasshouse and imbed it out in the spring .

I saw a beautiful one on the patio at Great Dixter this summertime .

Nearby , also by the pool is another genus Acer . I have forget its name but it front good with the Forest pansy beyond . With all this bright foliage I still love green leaves . I have a Mahonia which I turn for its lovely , soft leaf even though it does have yellow bloom . There are no prickles on this one , so the name is very appropriate .

Mahonia‘Soft Caress ’

And now for   my giantDahlia imperialiswhich I keep in the greenhouse as it is not hardy . I grew it from seed and I did n’t realise that this plant can grow to 20 foot . My plants are 3 years old and the shank look like bamboo cane .

Dahlia imperialis

The trouble is that this Dahlia pinnata blooms in November , or would do if the merest frost did n’t blacken it entirely . If you google it you will see that it has such beautiful blooms . I do n’t suppose I will ever see them . If I had any sensation I would get free of this goose and acquire something more appropriate to the clime . But as you see I have no common sense . But I did start the glasshouse window this year to aid it in its bidding for exemption . The Tree Dahlia is a good name for it .

I like all your pinkish foliage and your blue euphorbia is wonderful , I shall have to look for it .

I saw one of those Tree Dahlias in full flower in a Community garden just south of Sanfranscisco . I was amazed at the time . Lovely flowers rather like D. merkeii , but big , if memory serves or I could receive the photograph . I ’m even more amazed at yours drink down out the windowpane ! I would lie with to know your secret to evolve Stipa Barbara . I have try but unsuccessfully . Any tips ? I get word it is tricky to grow too ! Altogether a tremendous selection of foliage , give thanks you for the aspiration .

It ’s not vernacular that I see plants on your land site that are also growing in my own garden but there are in reality two in this berth : Pennisetum ‘ Fireworks ’ and Corokia x virgata ‘ Sunsplash ’ . I ’ve want a ‘ Forest Pansy ’ for a long fourth dimension but have hesitated as they tend to burn – and then there ’s the proceeds of my Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree - hating neighbor who might protest if it lived to reach its mature size .

So much to think about Chloris ! You are a true plantaholic and I fear there is no redemption for you 🙂 Such diversity of foliage and it made me reflect as I am a frivolous ‘ hay ’ lover who lives for colouring in bloom , at the disbursal of foliage I fear . fuck the insidious hues of your Malus .

You have some beautiful foliation combinations here Chloris . My dearie is the Euphorbia characias ‘ Glacier Blue ’ and all the hue of purple and burgundy are just fantastic !
