An emphasis on native plants
Today Kevin Kelly is taking us along to claver a fantasticpublic garden .
I of late contract a stumble to Mt. Cuba Center , which is located in Delaware . It opened to the public in 2013 , but its roots began about 80 years ago . The meat ’s mission is to inspire an appreciation for the mantrap and valuate ofnative plantsand to protect the habitat that prolong them . This is a pail - tilt garden for anyone to bring down . Here are just a few photos from my visit .
The pond is a wonderful situation to model , relax , and take in all the beauty around you . presently in salad days isPackeraaurea(golden gagwort , Zones 3–8 ) . Its basalevergreenfoliage forms a greatground coverfor shady , moist to drywoodlands .

Trilliumfoetidissimum(Mississippi river wakerobin , Zones 5–9 ) . Mt. Cuba Center has an outstanding accumulation of North American trilliums . More than a third of the aboriginal species are threatened with extinction due to habitat loss and overgrazing bydeerand feral grunter .
This is a spectacular specimen of our nativeCornusflorida(Zones 5–9 ) .
WithPodophyllumpeltatum(mayapple , Zones 3–8 ) , only plants that have two leaves will produce a exclusive flower in the axil of the leave .

Trilliumflexipes×sulcatum
Houstoniacaerulea(Quaker ladies , Zones 3–8 ) in a moss layer
This is a picture of the pool from the other side . The scene is so peaceable , and the bench looks so inviting .

Orontiumaquaticum(golden club , Zones 5–10 ) . This is an East Coast native that grows in shallow urine in swamps , marshes , ponds , and bog .
ThisTrilliumcuneatum(Zones 5–8 ) has such gorgeous leaves .
These tulips are planted on the side of a largefountain(which is just off the bottom of the picture).Cornusfloridamakes a wonderful focal point on the hill .
