From cottage gardens in Ohio to xeric rock gardens in Colorado
Hi GPODers !
Today we ’re heading to the Rockies and contain out a stunning alpine garden . However , Holly Culp did n’t always garden at in high spirits altitudes and a lot take to ascertain a lot to transition from lush bungalow garden in Ohio to a xeric design in Colorado :
I am originally from Ohio , where I had three quartern of an Akko of cottage style garden . My colour scheme feature ashen , pink , blue and majestic blossom with a intermixture of Lord’s Day and wraith loving plants . I prayed for the sun to shine and the rainfall to quit but my plants always thrived !

Now I live on with my husband in Denver , Colorado . I ’ve switched to a yellow , orange , and purple pallette of alpine , aboriginal and xeric plants . A totally unlike style of horticulture . I beg for rain , hope the hail storms drop our business firm , and am thankful for the occasional cloudy day !
Extreme oestrus and lack of rainfall have caused me to lose more plants than I have keep alive , so I have gotten into propagation from seeds and cuttings which I love . Alpine plants are also unmanageable to find , so multiplication offers me a wide variety of plant options . My source source for alpines is theNorth American Rock Garden Societyand our local chapter offers amazing gross sales of hard to find plants . For xeric plants I have found thatPlant Select , an organization that promotes plants that flourish in challenging and dry condition , to be a worthful resourcefulness .
This was what the grand look like when I moved in . My first project was removing all the “ lawn ” . A new color scheme made the business firm a good backdrop for the garden which fill our front and back cubic yard .

leap blooming‘Walker ’s Low ’ catmint(Nepeta×faassenii‘Walker ’s Low ’ , Zones 3–10)and oriental poppies(Papaverorientale , Zones 3–8)steal the show .
I converted the “ Devil ’s strip ” into a crevice garden for alpine plant . The display in this bed starts in March . The rocks allow the plant life to put down deep stem which help sustain them during spicy and dry summers .
Sometimes Mother Nature does it best . Yellow yarrow(Eriophyllum confertiflorum , Zones 6–11)and Purple Mountain ® Dominicus daisies(Osteospermum barberiaevar.compactum‘P005S ’ , Zones 5–9 or as an annual)are a acquire combination .

Verbascumoffers up seedling every class and supply beautiful purple color . The silver industrial plant on the left is woolly hawkweed(Hieracium tomentosum , Zones 6–9)which also reseeds . Both are tolerant of dry conditions . We made the pavement from old barf iron tree grates which I then paint to pair the house colouration .
ThisSpanish sandwort(Arenaria alfacarensis , zone 5–8)is one of my favorites and find the most looks from people passing by . The ‘ Thumbelina Leigh ’ lavender(Lavandulaangustifolia‘Thumbelina Leigh ’ , Zones 5–9)is a wonderful diminutive cultivar . Both of these plants want minimal water system so they are a good choice for xeric gardens .
A semi dwarf iris andbrunnerain the spring garden .

I used an old grindstone for a backdrop for sempervivums andblack mondo grass(Ophiopogon planiscapus‘Nigrescens ’ , Zones 6–11 ) .
The logic gate and fencing hide out trash cans and a compost barrel . I made the flower bay window from a calabash that I grew . The orange marigolds are a expert contrast to the bright blue gate .
Wow , Holly — I dead sleep with how you embraced your new climate and consideration to create a garden that is the epitome of alpine smasher ! Without your preamble I would have take on you garden in Denver your whole life .
