Getting Started
summertime is the time to take “ softwood ” cuttings to grow fresh hydrangea flora . As the stem turn ripe , they are call up ‘ hardwood ’ . Either way , the propagation method acting is basically the same .
Please do n’t get hung up on the timing : you could rout cut throughout the grow season .
To select deal shoot for cuttings , trythe flex test :

Depending on the plant , you may choose lateral ( side ) or apical ( main ) shoots .
The cuttings should come from newfangled growth ( current class ) on young and vigorous plants .
Because home propagating can be hit and miss , I like totake several cuttingsto ensure I get at least one that flourish .

Here in Ontario , the film editing take in mid - July are immediate to settle . But you may still take cutting aright through until decline , using anything from deal to semi - hardwood or hardwood .

Select your giver industrial plant the solar day beforeyou take cuttings and water the radical deeply if require .
Take your cuttings in themorningwhen the plant life is nicely hydrated .

Before film any cutting , get your pots and supplies quick . You should get the cuttings cut back and plantedimmediatelyafter removing them from the presenter plant .
cutting do advantageously withconsistent moisture , so I prefer to habituate charge plate rather than clay toilet if I have some useable , since clay dries out faster . But , if you could hold in on your plants every Clarence Day , either will do .
utilise pots at least6 - column inch wide and cryptic . If you ’re using wider pots , you could put several cuttings in each one .

Fill pots with potting mix made forcontainerplants ( no added plant food ) .
Gentlypress downthe container mixture ( it tends to be a morsel too fluffy ) and top it up so it ’s an inch below the backtalk of the pot .
In the photos here I initially set my pots in shallow vat , but will ultimately set them in cleared , abstruse tote bag with lids on .

Now you ’re ready to take your cutting .

Rooting Hardwood Cuttings
This TV shows how I root hardwood cutting . It ’s the same method , just done at a unlike time of year .
Here ’s my hydrangea . It ’s a fair youthful works . Ideally , the stem you apply for cuttings are the heaviness of a pencil or more .
Never take cutting from a plant that is weak , unhealthful , or otherwise pathologic . sizeable , full-bodied plant provide the best cuttings .

I did n’t have any shoot available that were pencil - boneheaded , but they should still do amercement . Because it ’s still summertime , there is time for the roots to form before wintertime .
If you ’re too late for deal cut , you could also root semi - hardwood and hardwood cuttings in late summer and spill . The method is the same as you see here . The difference is hardwood cuttings are tough but can take longer to produce .
See the hardwood cutting extension tutorial here for instructions .

I do not always cut my cutting the same style because I like to try out , but there is one basic formula that works well .
Start by looking at your cutting . We ’re going to remove most of the leaves . There ’s a method to it , so keep read .
In this next photograph , the lower two sets of leaf ( four foliage totality ) have been carefully removed withthe scalpel . you could also draw them off by hand .

It ’s the gist of the leaf node that grow roots so you want to be careful to forget them intact . By lay to rest this cutting deeply in the potting mix , withrooting hormoneon the nodes , we ’ll have a nice long root geographical zone .
In addition to remove the small leave , you’re able to now make a fresh cut aright BELOW the lowest leaf knob , removing that extra inch we allowed for with the original cut .
Next , we take care of thetop of the flora . In this next photograph , there are four leaf total . There are two down in the mouth leaves in a pair — we’re start to keep those leaves . If they are large , you may cut them with clean pair of scissors , go out just the lower one-half of each folio .

Right above them is the newest growth : two more leaves and a tiny sprout . These get pinched off .
By pinching off the newest top growth , the plant will finally produce side development , so you do n’t end up with a bean - pole of a industrial plant .
If you would like to see another example , this clause on softwood clipping also has diagrams of each of the canonic cuts .

Leaf TrimmingIt ’s common practice to cut the remaining leaves in one-half ( from side to side ) when propagating . The theory is that the plant will put more energy into root rather than hydrating the leave . I did not do this for the photos but it is recommended .
With a quarter teaspoonful of rooting hormone on a clean dish , dip / roll the lower two leaf node ( where we removed the two couplet of lower leaves ) in the pulverization and tip off excess .
Use a pencil to create a deep yap in the potting mix . Bury the cutting two leaf nodes deep .

If you ’re using a smaller pot , put the cutting off in the middle .
If you have a great pot ( 8 - inches or more ) , you’re able to put up to 4 cuttings in , positioning them around the inner sides of the pot .

During summer and downfall , the paragon set for encouraging root increase is to keep the cuttings in aclear , abstruse holdall with a palpebra , out of lineal sun .
You want ahumidenvironment andeven moisturein the develop medium .
If the underside of the pots receiveheat(without any peril of dry out out ) , the roots will form faster .

It ’s fine tokeep the lid onand let the humidness build up in the tote until it ’s time to get ready for winter .

What To Expect
It ’s hit and miss with homegrown cuttings . We have so much variation with the source plants , when and how we set up the cuttings , and the experimental condition they are nurtured in that it ’s hard to know why a cutting did well or not . That ’s why I pop out several of each type , hoping for at least 1 unspoiled one , and perhaps several .
In thefirst weekor so , your cut may slump over . If you prepared them properly ( with the good cuts and rooting hormone ) and they have humidity in the tote , they should revive . This can take a week or more .
Some cuttings look good the whole elbow room along . Others may suddenly become flat . Just roll with it .

After several week , check for signs of new increment . count on how close we are to fall , you may see different thing . The most obvious is new unripened growth up top . If you are using smaller locoweed , you may even see new root growth by the drain trap . But either way , upper growth intend the source have expanded and your cutting is doing well .
nearer to fall ( or in fall ) , the leave mayturn color . But as long as they arenot brownand wilting , your cuttings are belike doing fine .
If I have room , I tend to string up onto theslower cuttingsas well . If they still come out good for you , they may just take longer than the others . And sometimes , as in biography , it ’s the slower ones that end up being the best one .

If you ever noticesigns of disease — wilt , fungus , moulding — wantonness ship . Properly dispose of the plants , disinfect your supplies , and seek again another day .
Storing Cuttings in Fall and Winter
How do I overwinter hydrangea cuttings?
What you do next look on your office . If you have a greenhouse , you’re able to move the tote in there until spring .
Alternately , if there ’s enough new increment and you have at least 8 weeks before first freeze , you’re able to plant your cuttings in the garden or move them to a larger pot .
you may alsooverwinterthe tote in a sheltered location in a shed or outdoors , by first getting the cutting used to fall conditions ( lid more or less off , outside ) .

If I do n’t have totes available , I put the pots in a sheltered spot under a Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree and cover them in recondite straw .
Be sure the stain never dry out out or freezes , and bit by bit re-introduce the slip to light and outdoor conditions as spring progresses .
