Dear Readers ,

I have been on what can only be described as a stitchery bender the last few weeks . I made a two-sided grip as a talent for a very near admirer and it explode into request from other friend then to family wanting one . So I have been diligently making a individualised bag for each person and I need to share with you how to make them .

The traveling bag that started it all !

Reversible project bag

These dish are pretty promiscuous to do and I ’m capable to make one in a couple of hours now and the ladies in my local Hancock Fabrics know me well as well as the bank clerk at the local thrift store with all the fabric I ’ve been buying !

Without further ado , let ’s make a two-sided bag .

For all of these bags I used an upholstery type of fabric from the computer memory , my stash or even from the thrift entrepot . I like these canvas or drapery type fabric because they are durable . I used a mixture of sheet clobber and flannel ( fleecy , brushed cotton plant stuff to the Brits , not confront cloth fabric ) on a bag for my Mum .

press the fabric

The fabric needs to be wash and dried before you get depart to pre - flinch it otherwise , if you put the bag through the race , it could shrink and open up up holes in the seams .

Now that your cloth is teetotal , you require to get friendly with the smoothing iron and ironing control board .   push the fabric flat with scads of steam to enable you to snub accurately ; wrinkled fabric will make the musical composition skew - wiff .

Once your fabric is iron , consist it down on a gravid monotonic aerofoil with the back side of the fabric up and the right side ( with the design ) face down .

Measure the fabric

For the side control panel , I like to have 6 inches width on the bags I make but the length can be however long you require count on what you desire to use the bag for .   I ’m using 17 inches in total to let for two 1/4 inch seams .   You want to evaluate out two of these side panels for the outer handbag and another two side panels for the interior traveling bag .

For the principal front and back jury , you need two rectangle 26 inch long and 14 inches wide for the outer suitcase and another two for the inner udder .

I ’m using a fabric marker which will go away over sentence to nock all my measurements before cutting .

Create and Craft

I ’m cut out the objet d’art with pinking shears to reduce frazzle .   This canvass case fabric ruffle a hatful when cut with straight inch scissors .

Once all of your pieces are cut out , give them another press with a steamy Fe .

With the right sides ( pattern side ) of the cloth together , pin together .   If you have a designing that runs one way , you will need rotate the piece with will be the back piece so the run of the design is maintain .   I receive that play with the pieces with the design up I can work out out how the bag will expect then pin it on the back .

cut the fabric

I used myJuno Serger Machine by Janome Model 3434Dto get together the pieces because it was peculiarly prone to fraying .

you could see the serged hem in progress in this mental picture .   If you do n’t have a serger , you may sew a furrow then zigzag stitch the raw edges to stop them chafe .

I should note that if you have a plain fabric or one which does n’t have a directional pattern on the design , you could thin it as one long small-arm and not need to sew together two piece together .

Pinning the pieces

Here ’s the hem front and back panel .   You need to do this for both sets of front and back panel for the outer and intimate bag .

draw up the seam on the front and back piece to the eye of the side panel .   Place the side dialog box so the design is face down and the design on the front and back firearm is face up .

you’re able to see on this motion-picture show that the side trim with knock shears is not fray but the unpinked side is .

serge the pieces

Pin the bottom of the side panel to the front and back objet d’art .

pucker the nook a lilliputian to be able to sew it .

Here ’s the cumulate corner on the reverse .

Be sure to pin it to hold the corner in place .

Pin the side small-arm all the way along the side .

Here is a to the full immobilize side venire .

Hem in progress

run up all the seams with about 1/4 in seam .   I made a crease then ran the edges all through the serger to be able to reduce the bulk and add more strength to the bed .

If you do n’t have a serger , zigzag stitch the edge of the side panels .

Repeat the pinning and sew on all the side control panel for the inner and out bag .

serged hem

Cut strips of fabric about 3 in all-inclusive and as long as you demand .   stoop the strip in one-half to check that the size of it of the handgrip will work for you .

Once cut back , you will need to press in the raw edges on the strips .

Here ’s the pressed edges on one comic strip .

line up side panels

Next , close down the strip in one-half , enclose the boundary and press again with a steaming iron .

Once urge on , stitch the boundary down on the handle strap .

Turn the bags to they have the design face each other .

Pin the side panel

Smooth out the bags and line up the seam .

Slide in the handles for each side .

Loop the handle in each side and pin them to the pieces .   Line up the handles to see the same arrangement and that the length poking out is the same otherwise you will have scratchy handles .

pinning the corner

Pin the bag together .   The double personal identification number signify the start of the small gap want for turning the base the correct way around .   Another double pin will show where the gap ends .

Stitch a seam to fall in the pieces together .   I ’m using about 1/2 inch crease and I backstitch over the handles to build some more strength in the hold .

Here ’s the gap in the travelling bag I advert in the first place .   It is unstitched to allow   for the whole matter to be work inwardly out .

gathered corner

Here ’s the bag being turned inside out .   A chopstick aid to poke corners through .

Now that the bag is turned the right-hand way of life , press the dish , pay particular attention to the top bed .

Top run up the crack closed and stitch all the direction around the top of the dish .

Pinned corner

Here ’s the ruined bag !

I have been working on this Emily Price Post for a farseeing metre so I ’m happy to finally have it published now that the Sunday is shining , my seeds are being have day by day and my fruit trees , vine , bines and shrubs are all on their fashion I need to put my stitching down and crack on with the garden !
