In a Vase on Monday. Purple Blobs.

My offering forIn a Vase on Mondayis an genus Eryngium . You are probably more conversant with the metallic downcast barbed sea holly and its congenator which all flower in summertime . This one is the giant sea holly , Eryngium pandanifolium‘Physic Purple ’ . I have grownEryngium pandanifoliumbefore in my dry gravel garden for its spectacular rosette of spiky leaves and masses of magniloquent staunch with bunch of minuscule ball -shaped , dove- coloured flowers . This one , Eryngium pandanifolium‘Chelsea Purple ’ was new to my garden last year and is blooming for the first time . What has surprise me is how deep the flowers seem . It was looking mythic until the Baron Snow of Leicester on Friday broke its stalk . I am always looking for new and strange candidate for my winter garden so if this is going to make a substance abuse of flower so late it will sure as shooting find a place there .

This is a dramatic plant and as you see the root word is great , but as the plant life matures it will get much big and more imposing and the fork flower stems will arrive at 7 feet . It was discover in Chelsea Physic Garden by Christopher Lloyd and that along with the purple colour of the flowers gave it its name . He felt that this is a plant life with superstar quality .

So I have no cautiously arranged vase today , I just plonked the bow in a large clean jug . I really think this is a tie-up -alone industrial plant . I shall be interested to see how long it endure in water .

And here is the spiky foliage sit in the snow on Friday . The foliage are narrow-minded , serrate and ever - green .

You ’re good . She IS a stand alone plant , just right in a jugful . But I especially like the fanned out spike leaves in the snow . That ’s art .

And the edges of the leafage are razor crisp too ! Mine must be the common variety as its a pale vividness but I was think lately it would be attractive spray silver grey or Au for Christmas , but I do n’t really want to cut it . You could try drying yours and spraying it . Mine is about 10 – 11 ft . now . I do n’t often reply as you get so many , however I do require you to know I enjoy your blog staggeringly . Thank you .

A blogger acquaintance in nearby Long Beach grew this industrial plant at one fourth dimension . I was very covetous , although I do n’t think it was a long - terminal figure subsister for her and , with a strong marine layer in place , conditions in her garden are blue-blooded than my own . You do n’t see the plants for sale here but they sometimes come along in greenhouse in the Pacific Northwest , which has a climate more like yours .

Seven feet ! Wow ! I do like the way you ’ve presented it . I can see growing this plant in sealed conditions . Very courteous .

I did n’t recognize there was an Eryngium that blooms so latterly . It ’s so different and I like the subtle purpleness of the flowers .
