“ I dream my painting and I paint my dreaming . ”
Vincent Van Gogh
I doubt , at my years , I will be sow too many wild oats . There are , instead , new seeding notion that mold my dreams . I owe my life sentence - farsighted interest in seed germination to Miss Goodwin , my first grade instructor in the recent fifties . All the kids sow in green bean seeds in milk carton occupy with schoolyard soil . I find my first miracle back then — and not my last . I was hook as shortly as I saw the first , mystic , blanched cotyledon push through the territory , followed by Sunday - drenched , chlorophyll - fulfill green leave .

I moved on to tomato plant , squash and marigolds before plunging into penstemons , Pulsatilla and primula . Over the last eight yr , as the planet read five of the hot years on record , I added a fourth gear — an escape hatching — with persimmons , oaks and mockernut hickories .
Tree seeds are part of a recent ambition that goes like this : I prove to shake off the bad guys who peril the wellness of my witching woods . These guys are the polar opposite word of Miss Goodwin . The evilHouse of Shitgibbonpoisons us with dirty air and water . The Shitgibbons misgiving climate science and bemock my small forest . I wo n’t put up for insults tossed at my precious trees . I fight back . But turning back Shitgibbons is hard oeuvre . The odds are heap high against me . I soldier on — sowing one acorn and mockernut at a time .
I have collected tree seeds in gardens , parks , graveyard , alleyway — and in the wild — for years . My surmise is you wo n’t have to go far to find your own acorn , hickory nuts or colorful berries . Keep your eyes peeled and stay clear of Shitgibbons . They will bully you and call you a also-ran , but do n’t be afraid to sow tree cum .

sow the seeds is not hard . Take acorn for example . Squirrels works acorn ; you could , too . Promptly sow in your acorn outdoors in the fall . If you wait a few months , you ’re out of luck . The seed embryos dry up and drop dead . The sunny windowsill wo n’t function for germinating most unfearing tress and bush , either . An outdoor garden seam exploit well . These seed favour nature ’s normal rhythms . A warm stretch in fall , comply by colder wintertime temperatures , is what the MD Order .
hope me . By sweetener or by shepherd’s crook , squirrel will line up your hallowed source priming . I have pass over plantings in the yesteryear with protective telegram meshing that keep out the squirrels , but chipmunks and mouse launch a mode to slip them . This year , I aim a large stone , with an neighboring label , on top of my short two - foot straightforward planting . ( Now , if I can only remember to take the endocarp off next early April before they germinate … ) If the label get stomped on , or heave out of the ground in wintertime , I have a backup marker with a golf golf tee or two that will at least let me know what ’s underfoot .
My designation organisation is not foolproof . My last line of defense , fool that I am ( I think of , who dream of planting a flyspeck forest to fight the Shitgibbons ? ) , will be to essay to evoke my infirm recall to estimate out what I sow in in the first place .

Eight year ago I sow seeds of Kentucky coffee trees with my granddaughter when she was only three years old . These seeds are a tougher seminal fluid to crack . They once need mastodons and rhinos that gnashed on hard seedpods to pass on the sticky pulp magazine and seed . Then the animals lumber along while digestive enzymes work , give way down seed germination inhibitors . The ejaculate , excreted in a mess of dung , eventually germinate and secure the species ’ future .
It took two year of warm and cold seasons before my granddaughter ’s germ germinate — on their own — with no help from Pleistocene beasts , and another two year before we planted a pair along the Salt River in Salvisa .
Story is now 11 . She is produce quicker than a dome sprout . Her Kentucky coffee trees , eight yr from sowing , are almost ten feet tall .

Shitgibbons be plump .
