On April 1 , 2015 , four of the 14 fertile inheritance English BuffOrpingtoneggs that were shipped from California to our home in Botetourt County , Virginia , began to think up . My married woman , Elaine , and I kept a journal of our observations raising chickens so that we — and you — could better empathize what to expect from incubation elbow grease and gain perceptiveness into chicken behavior . Here ’s the history of Oscar , Orville , Ophelia and Olivia .
April
As bounce sprung , an eggs get down to concoct .
Around 12:30 a.m. , we were awoken by peeping come in from the brooding room , down the student residence from our sleeping accommodation . We rush to the brooder and witness Oscar already hard at workplace , as his tiny beak steady widened the cracking he had created . conceive the process could potentially take many hours , we went back to bed .
In retrospect , we should n’t have leave behind , as Oscar in all likelihood came out an hour or two afterwards : When I retard on him again at 4 a.m.—because I was too excited to kip — he had already escaped from his shell . This began what became consistent behavior for Oscar : He was always in a hurry to do everything a cockerel does .

Also of line , a second biddy , Ophelia , was well on her way to hatching . At 6 a.m. , my wife and I watched her emerge . Fascinatingly , as soon as she was out of the egg and still quite unfirm on her feet , Oscar appear to be doing the cock mating dance / shuffle around her . Such was the start of our first try at raising chickens .
At 4 a.m. , worried that no more of theeggs would brood , I awoke and was delighted to find that two of them were still feasible . For the next two time of day , I observed Orville slowly come forth from his plate . The other chick , however , was making very slow progress , and we began to despair that it would not survive .
At 8 a.m. , I had to leave for work , but I was thrilled to get word from Elaine around high noon that Olivia had made her launching . Just as Oscar was always well ahead of the development bender , luckless Olivia was always well behind .

Oscar shows feather development around three weeks.
Although we could n’t yet tell which sex activity Oscar and Orville were from their coming into court , it was readable that the two of them could . Oscar came out some 26 hours ahead of Orville , and so became the alpha male and never let his chum forget his inferior position .
Periodically , Oscar would bucket along at Orville and beat back him to the other end of the brooder . The former also danced around Ophelia and Olivia , though the pair was totally indifferent to his magical spell . I was positively charged we had two roosters and two hens . Elaine disaccord , saying that Orville might be a biddy and complained that I should n’t have given him a male name this betimes . obdurately , she decide to change his name to Oneida . Oscar express feather development around three weeks .
Oscar began precrowing , stretching out his neck , fluffing and flapping his feathers , and trill a very piteous case of crow ; Ophelia and Olivia remained oblivious to this . Oscar further tormented Orville / Oneida by periodically rushing him / her . Oscar around four weeks .

Elaine conceded that Oneida might be misnamed , as Orville briefly burden Oscar after yet another blast from his brother . Oscar right Orville after the latter ’s fugitive uprising by gravely peck him . Ophelia around four weeks .
May
Oscar take charge , and Olivia falls ill .
On May 27 , Oscar attempted to mate with Ophelia and Olivia in succession ; both fly , bellyache . Orville watched the whole installment from the base hit of a corner . Elaine ultimately conceded that no fowl named Oneida lived in our brooder .
Already much smaller than the others , Olivia began to periodically lose her Libra and fall , and only with great effort regain her footing . This proceed for three days , and she became weak and weaker . We feel that she would die soon and removed her from the brooder and placed her inside a box next to it . Afraid that she might have something transmittable , we put a probiotic in her piddle and in the water supply of the others .

The next day , I came home from school and plant Olivia ’s box empty and assumed that she had died . I postulate Elaine what was the fourth dimension of Olivia ’s dying , and she said the pullet was live an hour prior . We went below and institute Olivia in the brooder with the others , impress about naturally . Apparently , in an amazing recovery , she recuperated from her ailment and flew from her box back into the brooder .
June
The brothers fall into their role , as alpha Oscar starts to strut .
At dawn , Oscar manage what can be call a gasconade : a husky , croaky sound that had the cock - a - doo but no doodle . We ponder what would happen if Orville tried to crow ; the consensus was that Oscar would even off such misdeed . Our quartet move outside to theirhenhouseand run , which was make especially for them . ( Our heritageRhode Island Redsdwelt in the conterminous fenced - in coop ; the two running share a conducting wire fencing and three posts , which will become important later.)Oscar greets the first light .
Orville ’s humiliation know no bound , as Oscar always bedevil him , tag , pecking and leap onto his brother . Orville became totally slavish and fled as soon as his brother lead off to come near him .

Ophelia around four weeks.
Oscar ’s Corvus , now quite adultlike , started to occur at all minute of the day . He also begin his everyday crow about 90 minutes before the official sunrise , which is a trait we ’ve observe in thevarious roosterswe’ve owned .
Oscar crowed at a stranger for the first time , which we welcomed : Our alpha cockerel could now serve as the de facto guard dog for our home . Oscar also began to vocalize off any time a fomite come down our private road — yet another commendable trait .
July
There were a mass of fireworks materialise during this month .
Oscar made the food cluck for the first time , the specific sound a rooster urinate to let his flock know he ’s found a treat . Olivia and Ophelia amount to his call , and he sample , unsuccessfully , to mate with them as they fly . An outcast in his own coop , Orville spent much of his time off in a corner of the rill .
Oscarsuccessfully matedwith Olivia . He was a little unsteady during the climb up appendage but quickly get wind how to maintain his balance . Meanwhile , even though Ophelia was noticeably bigger than her belittled sister , she continued to absquatulate from Oscar every time he approached .

Oscar greets the morning.
Risking a thrashing from Oscar , Orville crowed for the first clip — a poor auditory sensation , to be trusted — and , unsurprisingly , Oscar charged and strap him . undiscouraged , Orville gloat again the next morning and again received his comeuppance . No more of his brag pass .
August
Oscar meets his catch , and Olivia leaves us .
At cockcrow , Oscar and Don , the inheritance Rhode Island Red alpha cock that live in the side by side running , began squaring off . Both cockerels were like in age and both had their own hens . Oscar was larger in sizing and perceptibly heavier , but Don was quicker and more agile . They meet every cockcrow at the center post that separates the two palisade runs , and they would chest - bump through the wire and endeavor to peck each other . Whichever one I let out first scarper to the pole and waited , tempo , for the other to leave his coop .
Olivia became very unenrgetic , not move for long period of time .

Oscar at 16 weeks.
I remove her from the test so that she might have some purdah and we could administer probiotics .
Oscar witnessed her departure and emitted a loud groan . He paced back and forth for two twenty-four hour period , apparently looking for her . deplorably , Olivia die on that 2nd daylight . We speculated that she was a latterly - born frier that was congenitally subscript — and ultimately doomed .
Oscar was not the only one disturbance . Losing a Gallus gallus that we had learn hatching was upsetting to Elaine and me as well . We had observed her conflict to hatch , get over being the diminished one of the sight , and persevere during an illness . But sometimes chickens just succumb , and we humans do n’t really know why .

Orville and Don square off.
For the first time , Ophelia willingly allowed Oscar to mate with her , squat in his presence . We were overjoyed , feel that Ophelia ’s egg - lay days must be nigh .
September
Oscar operate rogue , and Orville steps up .
Oscar became more and more sexually aggressive toward Ophelia , chasing her even inside the coop and when she attempt to roost for the nighttime . His pugnacity toward Orville increased as well , as he began to chase him into the corners of their spacious chicken coop . Then Oscar attacked Elaine from behind while she was refilling the feeder , so I attemptedbehavior modificationwith him , specifically picking him up , holding him steadfastly to my side and lightly bending his head downward in a submissive stance . Oscar ’s previous aggression toward Orville was one thing , but his aggressiveness toward Elaine was another entirely . The next twenty-four hour period , Oscar bit me on the hand , and once more , I tried the bent - school principal cure , which he followed up by attacking Elaine and me the next daytime . A day afterward , we culled him from the flock .
Peace reigned in the Buff Orpington chicken coop . Ophelia allowed Orville to mate with her . A day by and by , she put down her first egg , and the next day , a 2nd one . Orville ’s crowing set out to really “ bunce , ” and he met Don every morning at the halfway post for three to five minutes of thorax - bumping , pecking , mock charges and general objectionableness . Life was good , though , for the appendage of both flocks , and Elaine and I hoped that next spring Ophelia would loom a grip of eggs fertilise by Orville . Orville and Don feather off .
Aftermath
I wish the story of Orville and Ophelia and our first attempt at raise chickens could stop on that previous bright note , but , alas , such was not the case . On the morning of Oct. 16 , I set up Ophelia utter inside the coop from an unknown complaint . She had laid an egg the day before and seemed her sprightly self . Because Orville is such a giving and well-disposed cockerel , we regularize more egg from the same California provider last spring , but no nut were available . I read , however , that a pupil of mine was search for a good rooster , so I gave Orville to her . He is now the leader of a booming flock that live about 10 miles forth .
of late , I chance that pupil at a farmers grocery . She told me that Orville was doing well and had quickly become a family front-runner and had also collected an impressive raft of hens — signs of a true alpha male person . I narrate her that if she wanted to find a source for heritage English Buff Orpingtons , I would aid her in that quest . Heritage Buffs are a wonderful strain , and readers might want to reckon raising this or other traditional breeds in their backyard . It ’s truly a fascinating and rewarding experience to observe chickens from the time they hatch to adulthood .
