“ This is an amazing dish , and you will require more and more — make , bake , and serve with a gracious bottleful of Chianti wine , ” tell Chad . “ This dish was inspired by a recipe from our grandad , Nick Riccelli ’s , recipe boxwood . Grandma Theresa Ausilio Riccelli speaks often of her belated hubby ’s preparation skills . She said her mother , Rachel Scarcello , taught Nick a destiny about cooking , and especially recipes with the family pepper . Nick savor spending lots of time with Rachel to become skilled preparing and cooking her family recipes . This Italian family heirloom Madagascar pepper was donate to Seed Savers Exchange in 2015 by Chad and Michele Ogle - Riccelli of Des Moines , Iowa . Chad ’s expectant - grandparents , Giovanni “ John ” Ausilio and Rachel P. Scarcello , immigrate from Italy in the early 1900s . Their girl Theresa continues to grow the Piper nigrum , which today is at the center of the family ’s culinary traditions .
When asked why the family choose to keep this pepper and save seeds physical body year to year , Chad order , “ As Grandma ( Theresa Ausilio Riccelli ) would tell you , they are her family seed . Something that limited , you be intimate and go by on for contemporaries to do … These peppers are part of our heritage . ”
