A garden through the seasons
Today we ’re off to see Sally Barker ’s garden in Maryland .
My garden was feature several time on GPOD a few years ago ( Sally ’s Garden in Maryland Revisited ) . Needless to say , garden are constantly changing , and so blithely I have created and recreated mine over the past 25 years , always finding opportunities where losses fall out . This one - acre garden is now mature with masses of go up hydrangea on fences and on trees and full - grow bush and trees provide good structure throughout the seasons . There is always a succession of bloom beginning in spring with pink rhododendrons , ‘ Shasta ’ viburnum(Viburnumplicatum‘Shasta ’ , zone 5–8 ) , chartreuse spireas(Spirea japonica , Zones 4–9 ) , majestic nepeta(Nepeta× faassenii , Zones 4–9 ) , pink rose , and masses ofGeraniummacrorrhizum(Zones 4–8 ) . Summer brings a multitude of differenthydrangeasin wild blue yonder and in whites , many of which change to ping as the season progresses . Hostas , fern , myriad perennial andHakonechloagrass(Hakonechloamacra , Zones 5–9 ) shine in summertime . In the declension , hollies call on to reds and yellows , and at long last the keen bark of a ‘ Natchez ’ crepe myrtle(Lagerstroemia‘Natchez ’ , Zones 7–9 ) show off all wintertime .
In spring , the blank flowers of ‘ Shasta ’ viburnum slip the show in the back .

Pinkrhododendronsbloom in the background , while the ‘ Natchez ’ crepe myrtle in the nerve center shows off its always beautiful barque .
Hakonechloa grass is endorse up byhostasand anoakleaf hydrangea(Hydrangeaquercifolia , Zones 5–9 ) just come into bloom .

after in the time of year , the pink flower have fade and varioushydrangeashave total into bloom .
Butterflies feast on the flowers of ‘ Millenium ’ ornamental onion ( Allium‘Millenium ’ , Zones 5–8 ) .
A dark birdbath is backed by the glowing yellow foliation ofbleeding heart(Dicentraspectabilis‘Gold Heart ’ , Zones 3–9 ) .

Allium‘Millenium ’ takes halfway degree , backed up by the sonant , fluent foliation oflambs ’ ears(Stachysbyzantina , Zones 4–8 ) .
belatedly in the time of year , this part of the garden is all delicate , dusty pinkish from hydrangea flush heads ( Hydrangeapaniculata , Zones 3–8 ) , Autumn Joy sedum ( Hylotelephiumspectabile‘Herbstfreude ’ , Zones 3–9 ) , andhardy begonia(Begoniagrandis , Zones 5–8 ) .

In the fall , nothing can agree the brilliant colors ofJapanese maple(Acerpalmatum , Zones 5–9 ) .
