Six on Saturday. A Rainy July Day.
As gardener we are never glad . Last yr , here in the UK , we groan about invariant lachrymation and this year we do n’t have that job ; quite the opposite , a small more fair weather would be lovely . Still it is warm and the condition are consummate for the jungly essence in my alien garden . So at identification number one , I have big leafage . Each year , I coppice both my Golden Bean tree , Catalpa bignonioides‘Aurea ’ and my Foxglove tree , Paulownia tomentosaso I do n’t get any flowers , just enormous leave .
Framing my Foxglove Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree I have the crying mimosaAcacia pravissima , which I have just find is known as Oven ’s Wattle , goodness knows why . The foliage plant to the right is the very unusualRubus lineatuswhich has lovely pinnate foliage . This lovely bush descend hail from Burma and its beautiful foliage is a wonderful addition to my alien garden . You ’d never guess it belonged to the bramble category .
Here is a photo ofRubus lineatus . It does sucker a bit , but not too much and I love the pinnate parting which have a fishbone body structure if you face at them close up , they are silvery underneath .

Another tree which looks quite exotic is theMelia azedarachwhich I grew from a seed I picked up in Greece eight years ago . I have never envision this tree produce alfresco in the UK . It comes from Northern India and China so I presume it would be tender . But three years ago it had become too big for the glasshouse and had to go outside and take its chance . It has done very well and this year it is flowering for the first time . It has lilac , star - shaped flower which are fragrant if you put your nose into them . When I interpret it in Greece it was stand cosmetic clusters of yellow fruits , or to be accurate , I should say drupes . Apparently these are poisonous but I do n’t go round my garden graze on my plants .
My son is the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree fern queen ; he just adore them and has a huge collection which he fondly nurses through the winter with blankets and probably hot body of water bottles . He generously gave me three a few year ago and to my ignominy , I lost two of them . But I am delighted with my remaining one which has plenty of new frond this year .
But I have used the dais of the largest beat one to grow aFascicularia bicolor . This is a bromeliad related to the ananas . I got the idea for this after see that Christopher Lloyd grew one on his roof at Great Dixter . I thought that if it could live on a roof it should deal with my stump . I have a enceinte Fascicularia in my garden , but I decided to buy this one and if you have ever tried to divide a fascicularia you ’ll fuck why . It has really ruffianly leathery leaves with vicious thorn .

And now for some exotic blossom and they do n’t come much more alien than passion flowers . I have two passion efflorescence , neither of them is stout so in winter they have to jostle for office in the glasshouse with all the other cutter climbers which I ca n’t barricade develop . My greenhouse is not all that big so I lack blank space as well as vulgar sense . One is a lovely pinkish one , Passiflora x violacea‘Victoria ’ .
The other one , I have testify before , it is a large floweredPassiflora caerulacalled ‘ airheaded Cow ’ , a name I should comport in mind when I fall for yet another cutter plant . This one is supposed to be hardy but I have lost one in the past times so I am not get hold of any chance .
And come in at number six , or have I already surpass six ? I never was any well at maths . Anyway , Rhodochiton atrosanguineusdeserves an visual aspect . I used to know this asRhodochiton volubileso I have to strain and keep up . It is a endearing climber for a pot as long as you remember to give it well . It has pink , bell- determine bract with a long deep purple flowers . Next year I am going to try planting one out in my exotic garden . It is potential to keep it going inside in wintertime but I have bump it susceptible to red wanderer mite . But it is easy from germ . Once the blossom hang off if they are fertilized you get seed pods which look just like footling bottom . You let them dry on the works before harvesting the seeds .

So there we have my Six on Saturday , give or take a plant life or two . But then I never was any well at mystify to rules . Please check out thePropagatorto see what please other SoS addicts are delight .
