While editing this issuance , I have n’t been capable to get Joni Mitchell out of my head . Yes , that Joni Mitchell — specifically , her 1970 hit “ Big Yellow Taxi ” and the line “ You do n’t recognise what you ’ve got till it ’s gone . ” I miss my small garden . Sure , when I had less than 2,000 square foot of immature space I would plain always because it seemed like I never had enough elbow room for the plant I need .
And it was craze .
But more than a decade ago I go , and gain more space — a lot more . In hindsight , I like having a small-scale garden advantageously than a bountiful one . I ’ve take plenty of books on garden design that claim the risks are lower in a pocket-sized blank space because if you make a mistake it ’s a small one and can easy be fixed . I ’d say the opposite is true . In a bantam pocket garden it ’s gentle to descry a seating area that ’s out of proportion or a plant that just does n’t belong to where it ’s sited . In a big garden like mine , those mistake are often overlooked because of the enceinte scale . But they ’re still there . Gardening within a tiny footprint is harder , but in my judgement , it ’s more rewarding .

One of the first garden I got to snap in person Wiley Post - lockdown was the tiny backyard you ’ll see inTwo Plans for Small Urban Gardens with Big Impact . Designed by Christie Dustman , this space is pure magic . In fact , I was so enamour by every detail , every works pick and placement , that I stayed there long after sunset and keep back shot — which was made potential by the like an expert place landscape kindling that just enhance the languid tactile property of the cosy space .
It was n’t long after that photo shoot that I was scrolling through pictures of a similarly sorcerous humble garden on the West Coast , design by Courtney Olander . The details that this garden has are exquisite , not to note the ingenious ways it deals with site issue like a lack of privacy and piteous drain along the foundation .
I conceive that ’s when I first started hum that language from Joni .

It does n’t matter if your garden blank space is large or little , however . These two lilliputian plots are kettle of fish - packed with ideas that any size landscape painting can benefit from . One of my last projects for this garden season is set up a enceinte container under a downspout to airt runoff , interchangeable to the one you ’ll find oneself in one of those diminished gardens . It ’s exit to command some digging and grading , but I ’ll just put my earbuds in and select a motivational play list to get me through the grueling sitework .
Alexa , please play family hits of the ’ 70s .
