Treasures of the beginning of the season
Betsy Thompson has a modest townhouse garden near Albany , New York .
These are some portraits of bloom blooming here this month . There are many more . It is n’t gentle to choose which to let in , so I thought it best to go for variety .
This isTulipaturkestanica(Zones 4–8 ) an old and very honest diverseness , refreshed and classifiable .

Fritillariaraddeana(Zones 5–8 ) is a favorite flush of this type . Unfortunately , lily beetles love fritillaries as much as lilies . It has take a lot of study to keep these plant since the beetles obtrude upon my garden two geezerhood ago . ( SeeFine Gardening ’s tips on controlling lily beetles . )
Pulmonaria‘Trevi outpouring ’ ( zone 4–9 ) is the big of this type that I grow and is very attractive indeed ! Also , my cervid do n’t use up it ( I should probably impart : so far ! ) .
Muscari‘Valerie Finnis ’ ( Zones 4–9 ) is especially sweet . It is also prolific , but I do n’t find it trespassing in the way the commongrape hyacinthis .

Chionodoxa‘Pink Giant ’ ( Zones 3–8 ) is a better - behaved variation on the incursive blueChionodoxa . The snowy - flowering variety is also noninvasive .
While the blueMertensiavirginica(Zones 3–8 ) is most often seen , this plant can also show a image of tincture from aristocratical to lavender to pink .
The very earliest flag I have intercourse isIris × histrioides‘Katharine Hodgkin ’ ( geographical zone 5–9 ) . It is well planted in groups of at least a twelve .

Helleborus‘Golden Lotus Strain ’ ( Zones 5–9 ) is a dissimilar look for this genus .
