It ’s almost prison term to plant radish seeds in my area , and as always , I marvel if this will be the year that I read to like the root vegetable . I ’ve tried it a few different ways , and the only time it ’s okay is if it ’s completely hidden in a sweetheart . But that ’s okay , because I do n’t spring up radishes for the roots .

Update : I wish the root now , too , as long as it ’s fresh . I had been let the radish sit in my fridge for a few day before decide what to do with it , and the quality quickly deteriorated . I wish them raw on sandwiches , cooked in the air fryer , and shred to make with hashbrown potatoes .

The leaf , prime , and germ pods can all be eaten stark naked or cooked . They have a peppery flavor , like a milder version of the radical veg . If you ’re like me and do n’t like the root , try the above - ground section .

Most variety of radishes have little prickly hairs on the leaves , peculiarly as the plant gets old , so I do n’t recommend them for salad . The flowers and flower buds make a pretty last minute add-on to salads . The blooms wilt quickly , so refrigerate them if you ’re not using them immediately .

Radish foliage are sensitive , specially when young , so cook them in recipes that call for other tender green ( like in office of spinach ) . you could pick leaf severally throughout the growing time of year , or you could reap the foliage all at once when you gather the roots . break the stems from the root veg during storage , or else the bulbs will continue to draw wet and nutrients from the leaf .

Now for my favorite part of radish plant : the cum pods . They ’re crunchy , like a peppery version of a wampum snap pea . They ’re great in salads or as a collation with vegetable dip . I ’ve also chopped and added them to cooked cup of tea like stir - fries , chicken flock pie , and veg soup . The peppery taste go away with longer cookery time , so they total something unripened to the chicken pot Proto-Indo European and soups but do n’t kick in much to the look . Seed pods will be ready to cull about 2 calendar month after planting . reckon on the size and texture you require , they can be harvested shortly after they seem or you could waitress a calendar week or so until the seed have modernise more .

The fore are technically comestible , but I ’ve never tried them . I imagine they ’re rather unchewable and tough , but they could probably be juiced with other veggie for a homemade V8 .
