Back in the springtime I first write aboutmy weed - free garden experimentin which I used woven pot blocking fabric as mulch for my sweet white potato bed .
Whelp , I pulled the bottom two twenty-four hour period ago . Here ’s the video :
I started a lot of various sweet potato slew over the winter , then plant a batch of them in the bed … then it was prison term to wait … and hold back … and wait . Fortunately , there was perfectly NO weeding to do in the meanwhile !

The Verdict
I ’m not just certain what happened , but the honeyed Irish potato seem to be exclusively a boniato character – and the bed was n’t as productive as I had hoped it would be . I blame the variety in the video ; however , on further reflection , I think I could have burn the holes in the landscape painting textile a flock tightlipped and planted a rigorous layer .
Weedy course on left – sess - gratuitous garden bed on rightfulness !
hold out and learn .

Weedy path on left – weed-free garden bed on right!
The yield was likely 30lbs . I opine 60 - 100 would have been easy possible for a bed of this size .
On the up side , it REALLY ended up creating a extremely nice harvest and a totally weed - spare garden . It was the good - wait sweet potato bed I ’ve ever had .
NOTE : I attract this bed to begin with than I normally do . Usually , I find it good to await until near to the first frost before pulling angelic potatoes since you ’ll get larger tubers .
This year I was out and about doing a lot of yard and garden clean and jerk - up , plus we were low on roots in the buttery … so I just went for it .
alas , I do n’t mean I ’m going to shoot my destination of a ton of food this class . Nursery work , book writing , etc . put a bit of a hole in my plans … but I have n’t given up .
Next year !
As a last note : this DeWitt waver nursery fabric / charge card mulch is really good stuff and nonsense and endure a long time , unlike normal plastic which you might use once then throw away . I hate that kind of permissive waste .
This also lets water system through and allows the soil to breathe . In the video recording you’re able to see how pretty and fluffy the ground was beneath it . It ’s undecomposed stuff for killing off weeds in a solid food forest , too . Just pin some to the land and leave behind it for a few calendar month and you ’ll be left with nice , bare soil .
Bonus points if you turn sweet potatoes at the same fourth dimension !
